The aim of the project is not simply to restore this essential viaduct to the line. Using the research gained from the project so far, we are now busy developing an exciting programme of exhibitions and activities which will help us to share the story of the viaduct and those who worked on it. The restoration was completed in December 2020, just under a year after work began. They soon disappeared from mainstream culture, partially because they were programmed in Java Applets or Flash, both of which were something most browsers and mobile devices soon stopped supporting.

The second phase, to repair the brickwork, commenced in June 2020 but swiftly came to a halt when bats were seen flying out from beneath one the arches! A license was obtained from Natural England and thankfully work was able to restart in July. The original falling sand game was created in 2005 and various versions were wildly popular online for a few years. Work began on restoring the viaduct back in December 2019 - the track was lifted, ballast removed and new concrete poured in. The lineage from falling sand to Noita's 'Falling Everything' engine is even clearer. Before Noita he worked on Crayon Physics Deluxe, which has obvious physics-y parallels. The National Lottery Heritage Fund awarded us £853,000 of grant funding towards the restoration of the Falling Sands Viaduct! Through the generous donations from individuals, community organisations and businesses, we raised £397,000 to add to the grant. The basics of falling sand games are simple, and well-explained by one of Noita's three developers, Petri Purho, in this blog post. In March 2019, we received some eagerly awaited news. Water had penetrated the arches, causing cracks and eroding brickwork and mortar joints.
